FAQ

FAQ

Assembly

Do the bullhorn handlebars come wrapped?

Yes. One step closer to being ready to ride.

How do I assemble?

Assembly instructions and a quick video are on our website at mbikesusa.com/ride.

How much will I have to assemble?

Your MBIKE will arrive in a large box approximately 90% assembled. Instructions and tools are included for the simple final steps of attaching the pedals, seat, front wheel and handlebars. We highly advise you have a pro bike technician assemble your MBIKE for the safest and most enjoyable riding experience.

I like a blank look, are the frame logos removable?

Yes, the logos are stickers so you can peel them right off. It won’t hurt our feelings…much.

What tools do I need?

A 5/32 and 3/16 allen key and a 15mm and 10mm wrench. Tools are included with bike purchases to keep you riding tight, but professional assembly is required for the 1-year warranty.

What type of pump should I use?

MBIKES, like most single-speed bikes, fit a Presta valve bike pump. The tires have a Presta valve which has a narrow diameter and is only found on bike tires so car pumps at gas stations will not work. We recommend a durable floor pump with a stable base and accurate PSI gauge.

Inflate your tires until they feel firm. You can check your tire sidewall for the recommended PSI. Keeping your tires inflated reduces the likelihood of getting a flat.

Bikes

Can I change out the handlebars?

Yes. MBIKES come standard with bullhorn handlebars. Why ride with one hand position when you can have two? Leaning up on the bullhorns is nice for those uphill battles. Bonus, they look awesome. But you can change them out to whichever handlebar suits your riding style best. Our headsets fit standard 25.4mm stem clamp diameter and 22.2mm brake clamp diameter handlebars.

Can I install a water bottle cage?

Yes, the frames have two water bottle braze-ons.

Do MBIKES come with brakes?

Yes, duh! MBIKES come standard with a Shimano front brake. A pro bike technician can add a rear brake for a minimal cost.

Do you make women’s bikes?

Yes. MBIKES are bikes. Bikes are unisex.

How much do MBIKES weigh?

20-25 pounds depending on the size. One of the advantages of a single-speed bike is that it’s lightweight. Perfect for the urban rider.

What is the gear ratio?

44/16 – 44 teeth on the chain ring and 16 teeth on the rear cog.

What material are the frames?

High tensile steel, a popular material for bike frames because of its strength and durability.

What size frame should I get?

Frame size is a measurement of the seat tube. MBIKES offers three frame sizes relative to your height. As a rule of thumb it’s better to get a frame that’s slightly small rather than too large. You can always adjust the seatpost or stem to get the best fit. View sizing chart.

50cm: 5’-5’6”
54cm: 5’6”-5’10”
58cm: 5’10”-6’4”

What size tires fit the rims?

We recommend using tires ranging from 23x700C to 32x700C. MBIKES come standard with 28x700C tires, which are 700mm or 27.6 inches in diameter. Tubes measure 700 x 28/32, presta valve length depends on rim depth.

Where are MBIKES manufactured?

MBIKES along with about 95% of the bikes sold in the world are manufactured in China where pedal power is a mainstay. With such a long history of biking culture they have gotten really, really good at it. And we aren’t in a position to compete with that…yet.

Fixed-gear and single-speed riding

Do MBIKES come freewheel or fixed-gear?

Your MBIKE will arrive freewheel since fixed-gear riding takes a bit of getting used to, but by simply removing the rear wheel and flipping it around you have gone from freewheel to fixed-gear or “fixie”.

One speed? Wouldn’t more gears be better?

If you were climbing a mountain, yes. MBIKES are for urban riding. Gears are heavy and require more mechanical maintenance. Single-speed bikes require minimal maintenance and are lighter in weight without all those gears. Light equals fast. Much easier for carrying down stairs to the train or lifting onto the bus bike rack.

What is a single-speed fixed-gear bike?

A fixed-gear is a single-speed bike without the ability to freewheel or coast. The rear cog is attached or ‘fixed’ to the bike’s rear wheel so whenever the wheels are moving, the pedals will go around. So you’re always pedaling on a fixed-gear bike or “fixie”. You pedal backwards, you go backwards. If only it was that easy!

A single-speed bike has a single gear ratio with the ability to freewheel or coast so you don’t have to always pedal.

MBIKES serve both fixed-gear and freewheel riding depending on how you set up your rear wheel. All our bikes come with flip-flop hubs; simply flip around your rear wheel to switch from free wheel to fixed-gear.

What is the advantage of single-speed bikes over gears?

Fixies and single-speed bikes are simple, reliable, easy to maintain, control and provide endless opportunities for customization. They are popular among urban cyclists, offering the advantage of a lighter and simpler design requiring less maintenance than a multi-geared bike.

Riding fixed-gear gives riders a closer connection to their bike and the road. It takes a bit of getting used to, but can make for the ultimate riding experience and a leg workout that would get you ready for short shorts faster than Richard Simmons. Once you make the switch you’ll always choose fixed.
